Vertical vs. Horizontal Storage Carousels

Not all storage carousels are created equal. If you’re weighing the pros and cons of a vertical storage carousel versus a horizontal storage system, it pays to look beyond footprint alone. In automated environments, vertical carousels and vertical lift modules (VLMs) offer more than space savings – they deliver faster picking, improved ergonomics, and higher ROI.

Maximize space in all dimensions

A horizontal storage carousel stretches across your floorplan. A vertical storage system climbs –  often reclaiming 60–85% of previously wasted space. That space matters: industrial leasing volumes jumped 14.6% in early 2024 to over 105 million square feet, and commercial construction costs are now averaging $214–$238 per square foot, depending on facility type. In high-value real estate, such as production floors, distribution zones, and MRO environments, utilizing your vertical space is a smart financial decision.

Here’s the simple truth: we rent in square footage, but we work in cubic feet. It costs more to expand your footprint; it doesn’t cost anything extra to use the vertical space between your floor and ceiling. Vertical automation makes that space productive.

Add automation, and every tray or bin is tracked, accessed, and delivered with precision. No more aisle walking, ladder climbing, or wasted movement.

Compare vertical carousels and VLMs

Increase throughput with less labor

When every pick is automated and every tray is brought to the operator, productivity climbs. Vertical storage carousels and VLMs keep your team in the golden zone: no stretching, bending, or searching required.

Compared to horizontal systems, vertical models often:

  • Support faster batch picking
  • Require fewer touchpoints
  • Scale higher without expanding your footprint

Better Control. Fewer Errors.

Unlike open shelving or even many horizontal storage systems, vertical ASRS offer more precise access control. Combine that with light-directed picking or barcode scanning, and you’ll see fewer mispicks – and fewer returns.

Travel and search time in a manual operation can take up as much as 60–65% of a picker’s day. Automation makes every step more accurate, traceable, and secure.

This means:

  • Reduced shrink and loss
  • Secure access to high-value or regulated items
  • Trackable inventory movement

When a horizontal carousel might be the right fit

There are situations where a horizontal storage carousel makes more sense than going vertical.

If your ceiling height is limited, or if you’re working with unusually long, bulky materials that don’t lend themselves to vertical stacking, a horizontal system can be the better solution. Horizontal carousels can also work well in high-traffic areas with lower pick frequency or when floor-level access is preferred.

Vidir specializes in vertical solutions (it’s in our name). But we’ll never recommend a system that doesn’t make sense for your facility. If that means a horizontal carousel is the better fit and we’re not the right partner this time, we’ll tell you that upfront. Because for us, it’s not just about the sale; it’s about doing right by your operation.
