The Challenge: Limited Access, Limited Time
At many Micro Center locations, 3D printer filament is stocked using traditional 8-foot racks – often 12 to 16 in a row, lining more than 100 feet of floor-to-ceiling shelving. It’s impressive in showcasing variety, but presents some practical limitations. For customers, it can feel a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack, especially when time is tight and shelves are stacked high.
It’s not uncommon to require assistance, and during peak hours, staff can be pulled away from more consultative customer interactions. And if customers can’t find what they’re looking for in the time they’re willing to spend, they may default to ordering online, which, while less convenient and more expensive, can be likely to stick once they make that shift. It’s no surprise that Micro Center is exploring alternatives like merchandise vending machines that reclaim space and support a more self-serve model.
The Solution: A Self-Serve Showpiece
Santa Clara became the third Micro Center location to install a Vidir Pan Carousel, but the first to feature the new plexiglass model. Visible from the front entrance, the carousel adds visual flair and hands-on convenience. This approach to automated retailing enables customers to browse, select and retrieve filament without staff assistance. Customers scan a swatch card to select their color, and the carousel rotates to bring the correct pan to the retrieval window, with LED guidance leading the customer to the right package of filament.

Micro Center in Santa Clara has 3D printed swatches for each filament so customers know what they’re getting, since product color doesn’t always match the package representation. Customers scan the barcode on the swatch to get the product they need.
This LED-guided automated vending system is a standout example of how retail automation enhances the shopping journey, blending convenience, clarity, and self-serve appeal.

The automated vending retail solution reduces 96+ feet of racking into a space smaller than two compact car parking spots.
The Fila-Monster gets a workout, too. The Santa Clara location sells 1,100–1,200 rolls of filament each week.
“It’s like having another employee,” Baker says. “It saves time, it saves labor, and customers line up just to use it.”
The Results: Space Saved, Experience Elevated
This kind of retail automation frees up floor space and creates a more engaging and efficient shopping experience.
- Space reclaimed: 12–16 shelving units’ worth of filament now fit into a single carousel, freeing space for over 30 3D printers on live display.
- Sales supported: Self-serve access enables customers to buy multiple packages of filament in one visit – many are in store three to four times a week.
- Labor optimized: The carousel allows staff to stay focused on high-value interactions. Baker shares, “On weekends, without the carousel, we’d need two more people on the floor.”
- Customer delight: With its clear front and selection guidance lights, the “Fila-Monster” draws attention and praise. Survey and Google review feedback call it out by name:
“I absolutely adore the 3D printing filament elevator that rotates to find the exact color you selected.” — KG
“Don’t even get me started on that 3D printer filament wall… it’s giving ‘rainbow realness’ with more colors than my wig collection!” — J
“Love the display and dispenser for 3D filament.” — DH
“Cool 3D filament selector.” — RY
- Inventory simplified: Restocking is quick and accurate. “It’s an inventory system in itself,” says Baker.
Its success demonstrates how automated retailing can increase product accessibility while freeing staff to focus on consultative sales.
Looking Ahead: More Than Filament?
The success of the Fila-Monster highlights the growing role of retail automation in delivering scalable, high-impact customer service. As more retailers look to future-proof their in-store operations, embracing automated retail commerce helps stores deliver both convenience and brand distinction.
Baker believes the carousel’s model could apply to other product categories, especially small electronics. But even now, he calls it “priceless”:
“It enhances the customer experience, saves money, and saves space. It helps us deliver the kind of service that keeps people coming back.”
